Confessions of a Binge Knitter

Well that's my weekend sorted.

I have been waiting ever so (un) patiently for this to arrive so I can start my "As You Like It" project  using the yarn specified in the original 1940's Knitcraft pattern.

I made a start a while ago using some modern red 4ply, but am so eager to make it in the original yarn that I'm going to put it into the WIP (works in progress) pile and start a new version.

It's summer here in rural New South Wales, Australia and climbing temperatures mean we don't venture outside much during the day, unless it's to spend time on the riverbank.

So flix and chill it is.

I read an online article a few years ago about binge watching while you knit.

These days it's called "knitflixing", which the Urban Dictionary describes as: 'the act of working on a knitting project while watching a streaming video from an online provider like Netflix, Amazon or Hulu.'

I remember thinking at the time "Well, derr" (for those of you who do not hail from rural Australia "derr", pronounced like burr but with a D and elongated URR, is a term used to describe something that is said, or written in this case, that is completely blinking obvious).

Definitely NOT a new thing.

My Mum and Nan would often knit while watching television.

As a teen I spent many a Monday and Tuesday evening on the little brown lounge suite at my grandparent's house as she knitted through the weekly episodes of A Country Practice.

I have vague memories of earlier days where Mum would pause at midday to watch The Mike Walsh Show or the midday movie, usually with knitting in her lap.

In later years it was The Bill and then Foyle's War.

One of my most treasured memories of my Mum is the entire weekend we spent together at her house, not long after Dad had passed away, wallowing in our shared grief, drinking tea under the air conditioning (again rural Australian summer - ick) and binge watching entire seasons of Doc Martin while knitting.

I discovered the 1980s  Miss Marple series last year and may have watched all seasons several times since. I'm a little sad I didn't find it years ago, as I am sure Mum would have loved it.

Lots of lovely handknits to look at - to be honest I would have been bitterly disappointed if there wasn't, Marple is the ultimate in knitter sleuthing after all.

It was interesting to see Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) knitting in the same style as Nan, Mum and myself (Lever knitting or Irish Cottage Style).

Most recently however,  I have been indulging in podcasts and discovered that you can access audio books from our library for free through Borrow Box.

I have of course worked my way through their entire Agatha Christie collection as well as a good selection of Cold War spy novels and am currently indulging in The Man who Died Twice (follow up to the Thursday Murder Club - which I highly recommend if you like a murder mystery with a little humour).

There will almost certainly be some binge inspired vintage knits gracing these pages in the near future.

Well, I'm off to watch Margaret Rutherford do her Marple thing on DVD and see how many times I can spot her knitting.... my fingers poised to pause and rewind as required. If you watch along too and pay attention you might spot Joan Hickson who went on to play Marple in the 1980s.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Meg
